Mechanical Engineering- Eligibility, Scope, Career, Roles, Pay Scale, Courses After Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical engineering has been used in several medieval and prehistoric societies by humankind. This stream is the oldest and emerged as a discipline since the 18th century. Since then, it has witnessed consistent growth with advancements in technology.

About Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is actually a branch, which applies the core principles of physics, engineering, and material design for production, design and operation of machines. It consists of principles of electricity, thermo-dynamics, mechanics, materials science, etc. to analyze and design industrial equipments, machinery, manufacturing plants, robots, aircrafts, weapons etc.

Eligibility

To become a mechanical engineer, a student should have a bachelor degree offered at various mechanical engineering colleges. The bachelor degree program lasts 4 to 5 years. Some students also pursue a PG degree in technology, engineering, and science. It may not have research. Students who are interested in research and academia can pursue Ph.D.

Job Profile

Mechanical engineers are assigned to build and create mechanical devices. They apply all the basics of math and science to create viable, practical solutions used by us. It is a very diverse field. Here are some of the most common job roles in mechanical engineering –
  • R&D – A mechanical engineer also improves and discovers various methods to cater to the needs of humans.
  • Product Design – A mechanical engineer is also assigned to design anything, which consists of mechanical motion to develop products.
  • Manufacturing – They develop machines, which transform materials into products.
  • System Management – They also oversee and supervise the large system operations like power plants.
  • Design Machines – They build and design systems of machines and machines to improve efficiency and product quality at low costs.

Scope in Mechanical Engineering

Well skilled mechanical engineers are demanded widely in India and abroad. Their expertise is needed in several manufacturing industries, such as aviation, automobiles etc. With the advent of technology in recent time, their skills are required in several fields like biomedical engineering, nano-technology, conservation of electricity and more. Mechanical engineering is going to be the top paid career opportunity over the next few years, according to the reports.

Career Options

Mechanical engineers are capable to work in several industries, such as gas turbines, thermal power plants, agriculture, oil refining, aviation, armed forces, automobile, pharmaceutical and other industries.

Pay Scale

Basically, the salary of a mechanical engineer is ranging from Rs. 10000 to Rs. 25000 in starting. The salary varies according to the level of a company and industry. Some of the packages vary according to experience, skills, expertise and job responsibilities. Skilled mechanical engineers can also earn up to Rs. 40000 to Rs. 45000 per month.

Courses after B.Tech or BE Mech.

Students may pursue diploma or technical courses, including safety technology, piping technology and management etc. For career in Merchant Navy, graduates may pursue Marine Engineering. Graduates may also pursue M.Tech and specialize in the disciplines and sub branches like Machine Design, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Drafting, Control Systems, CAD, and Automobile Engineering.

Mechanical Engineering colleges in Delhi NCR require students to have certain traits. Among the prominent requirement to get education is the zeal of students in the machinery and mechanical components, followed by their functioning. They should also have specializations in chemistry, physics and math.
